Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
