Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
