British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
